Euan Craig: A Mingei Legacy

Join Euan Craig for this inspiring artist talk including images of living and training as a potter in Japan. Mingei is the name coined 100 years ago for a movement that was established to save traditional humble craft skills pertaining to the everyday crafts. Euan will be joined by Slow Clay Centre founder and ceramicist Jane Sawyer who also trained as a potter in a co-operative village Mingei pottery in Japan. This is sure to be a rich discussion sharing respective experiences about Mingei.

When: Tuesday 21 April, 6-7.30pm

Where: Slow Clay Centre, 13 Keele St, Collingwood

Tickets: $28

Born in Melbourne, Euan Craig studied ceramics at TAFE and Latrobe University before moving to Japan in 1990 to pursue his training with Living National Treasure, Shimaoka Tatsuzo in the Mingei pottery town of Mashiko. He settled there and established his studio and wood kiln in 1994. In 2011, as a result of the earthquake and tsunami, he relocated inland to his wife’s family village, in Minakami, where he re-established his studio. Euan has exhibited his work internationally and been guest artist at many conferences. He has held numerous solo and group exhibitions and his work has featured in many publications, television and radio in Japan. He has also written articles for ceramic and art publications in Japan, Australia, US, UK and Europe. Euan is a member of The Australian Ceramics Association and The Japan Mingei Association.

Jane Sawyer is the founder of Slow Clay Centre and trained in Japan in a renowned Mingei pottery, Shussai-gama, when young (1987-89). Prior to that she trained with Australian potter Andrew Halford (who was apprenticed to Shimaoka Tatsuzo) and after returning to Melbourne she completed a Masters in Fine Art at RMIT. She established Slow Clay Centre in 2012 where she is committed to passing on the skills she learnt as an apprentice in Japan.

Join Euan for his artist talk followed by a rich conversation with Jane about Mingei.
